Public opinion against State Issues 2, 3, 4 & 5 continues to build. The Canton Repository says vote NO on Issue 3:
State Issue 3 should not become part of the Ohio Constitution. The Repository urges readers to vote “no” on Issue 3. It would place into the Constitution a long, complicated schedule of limits on political donations. Our opposition to this is two-pronged.
First is our philosophical opposition to limits. Money buys political speech. Free speech is one of the five rights guaranteed by the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, the bedrock of citizen freedom in this country.
Rather than favor limits on political donations, we favor full disclosure of the names of people who make donations, and the amounts they give.
Second is the unwise proposition of setting dollar limits into the Ohio Constitution. Let’s say that a majority of Ohioans think it’s proper to limit an individual to $25,000 in political donations a year. What happens to that limit 10 or 20 years from now? It can’t be adjusted for inflation without amending the Constitution all over again.
If the majority of Ohioans want to place limits on campaign donations, those limits should be put into laws that can be more easily changed, not into the Constitution. Vote “no” on Issue 3.
